Trip Itinerary

The Hindukush Traverse from Naltar to Chitral is a challenging, high-altitude adventure crossing four spectacular mountain passes—Naltar Pass, Assumbar Pass, Ghamubar Pass, and Thui Pass. This remote route links the dramatic landscapes of Naltar, Ishkoman, Yasin, and Chitral, offering untouched wilderness, glacier crossings, and authentic mountain culture. Designed for experienced trekkers, this journey delivers breathtaking scenery, peaceful alpine camps, and a truly raw Hindukush experience far from commercial trails.

Day 01 :
ARRIVAL ISLAMABAD

TNA representative will meet you at Islamabad International to transfer you to hotel. In the afternoon will pay a visit to the twin cities Islamabad and Rawalpindi to uncover the history of Pakistan. In the evening will have a brief meeting about the on going trip highlights, activities and requirement.

Day 02 :
DRIVE ISLAMABAD TO CHILAS

Ten hours driving along the Naran and Kaghan Valley or on the 8th wonder of the World the Karakoram Highway which is worth to enjoy the diverse towns, cities and villages with unique culture of the people along Hazara and Kohistan regions of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province formerly it was North West Frontier Province and the mighty Indus River flows down from the Karakoram and Himalaya Mountains. In route we stop at ancient rock carvings close to Chilas of left by travelers, pilgrims, traders on their way to Sub-continent and Central Asia. It dates back to 5000-1000 BC the purpose of their journey on the rocks in different languages.

Day 03 :
DRIVE : CHILAS TO NALTAR 5 HOUR

The journey begins on the the 8th wonder of the world Karakorum Highway to Gilgit in two hours. We will witness the Nanga Parbat the second highest mountain in Pakistan and the junction point of the Three Mountain Ranges Karakorum, Hindukush and Himalaya and visit to Gilgit bazaar. After the lunch to Naltar for our adventure destination.

Two hours along the beautiful village of Nomal and on narrow Naltar road along the river. Hidden in the mountains up a dramatic barron gorge 19 km long, the surprisingly green and lush of Naltar adds to the joys of your holidays. Overnight stay in a hotel at 2880 m with spectacular views in the surrounding area. You will dive into nature by the evening. Manage porters here for the next trek. 

Day 04 :
TREK NALTAR TO LOWER SHANI

It takes 6 hours if you start trek from other village otherwise, we can drive 12 km in jeep it takes about one hour more or less to 7 color Kutu Lake surrounded by birch trees then start trek from here to the Lower Shani will take 4-5 hours along the Naltar River passing through thick forest and Gujar settlements with awesome views all the way the walk is quite smooth. Ahead the views of numerous snow-capped peaks are eye-catching. Shani Peak 5,887m, the dramatic triple headed Twins 5,798 and 5,700m visible further north, many more to see. We will camp at Lower Shani at 3,800m, quite lush, fed by a small stream edge with flowers; pink bistort, purple geraniums, blue gentians, white edelweiss and many more. Herds of animals roam the hillsides.  

Day 05 :
:TREK LOWER SHANI TO UPPER SHANI

5-6 hours continue on a good path along the edge of the Shani Glacier for two hours and then another 3 hours to Upper Shani is completely ascending, climbing straight ahead with zigzagged path through knee-deep flowers (during mid-July to August) and up a wide grassy shoulder. You come out on a big plateau featuring herds grazing yaks, cows and horses. There are several beautiful campsites with clear streams and spring water and great views of overhanging seracs. Camp at 4,100 meters on the plateau with exciting views the night will be about 10C.

Day 06 :
TREK UPPER SHANI TO KRIUE BORTH CROSSING NALTAR PASS

6-8 hours the first two hours to climb up with stones and snow takes you to the flat top of the pass from where we have mind-blowing views of snow covering mountains in a distance to the northeast over Passu in Hunza. From the pass you will continue to drop down towards Pakhora Ishkoman all the way descending on the glacier for two hours and then on the crest of the moraine down to Kuriu Borth. The usual campsite is at about 3,900m nearby a big red stone that gives the name kurui Borth (red stone in Khowar Language is spoken in Ishkoman). Here it is better to move down another one hour to UCh, a beautiful place with Lush green meadows in a thick forest of pine, birch and willow trees. Overnight stay.

Day 07 :
TREK KRIUE BORTH TO PAKHORA & BIRGAL

Five hours descending the two hours along the trees and then on a clear donkey path all the way down narrow gorge winding and zigzags. The river stays down to your right there are several small waterfalls along the way. Pakhora is the largest village in Ishkoman. We will drive down to Chatorkhan for an overnight stay in a hotel to relax after this tiring trek. Hot shower and washing in the beautiful Garden of Royal Guest House. A hearty traditional dinner and then a musical night singing songs and dancing (if you are interested) a bone fire in a beautiful Royal Garden. Overnight in sweet dreams.

Day 08 :
FREE DAY IN BIRGAL CHATOR KHAND ISHKOMAN

You will have a two hour walk to Dain Water Fall above the village or you can hire a car if you wish. It is worth visiting here to interact with local people to explore the life of the mountain communities of Hidukush. The views from the waterfall are dramatic because you can see Hindukush and Karakoram mountains both. Overnight stay in the Guest House.

Here we offer several hiking and trekking within the valley and traverse routes to side valleys in the surrounding. 

Day 09 :
TREK CHATORKHAND TO CHARUNJI

An hour drive to Asumbar and trek to Charunji 5-6 hours ascending on a clear path passing through summer villages. The stream flowing down along your side is heart-touching. There is a thick forest along the way, stunning views of tiny peaks and meadows. Camp at Charunji 3,600 meters. Overnight stay in a tent.

Day 10 :
TREK CHARUNJI TO JANALI GARI

A Journey Through Alpine Beauty

Enjoy a captivating trek along small streams and stunning vistas as you ascend toward Janali. Along the way, you’ll pass the Gujar Nomads’ huts at Bortha Borthi, famous for their iconic large stone. Continuing further, the Asumbar Pass comes into view, marking your approach to the next campsite.

Arrive at Janali, a beautiful green flatland whose name means "playground" in the local language. According to local lore, shepherds once played polo here, adding to its unique charm. This alpine region, above the tree line, offers a surreal landscape of colorful rock formations and hanging glaciers.

Spend the night in a tent, surrounded by the pristine beauty of this remarkable place.

Day 11 :
TREK JANALI GARI TO JIJI SHAWARAN/MAYUR ACROSS ASUMBAR PASS

Trek to Mayur ascending 400 m up smoothly to the pass 4,410m. Then descending down to the lush green meadows with willow bushes. The highest point of your trek at the Asumber Pass from where we can have a panoramic of snow-capped peaks and dramatic plateaus around. Above all, in a distance we would see the highest mountain of Hindukush Trichmir 7,870 meters, and other numerous peaks above 5000 meters in the surrounding.  Mayur is beautiful place with couple of summer huts where a stream joins from the east Mayur Lake to Asumbar Stream that gives an awe-inspiring attraction of the landscape here. Overnight stay in tent.

Day 12 :
TREK MAYUR TO SANDI YASIN

Descent to Sandhi and Yasin Valley Highlights

Descend through the scenic Asumbar Valley to Sandhi and Yasin, passing summer houses with herds of goats, fields of wheat, and barley. The trail narrows into a stunning valley, leading to the jeep road near Sandi Village, where we’ll visit the historic Mudori Fort. A short climb offers panoramic views of the picturesque Yasin Valley.

Day 13 :
SANDI YASIN TO DARKOT THE LAST VILLAGE OF YASIN

We will drive to Darkot that takes one hour from Sandhi Village. The drive is along the beautiful villages on metaled road with stunning views of snow-covering peaks over Darkot. It is the last historical village of Yasin Valley where the British traveler George Hayward was murdered in 1870 on his way to Geographical survey of Oxus and Indus. The Tibetans used Darkot Pass to enter Yasin Valley in early 7th Century from China via Wakhan Corridor, the Russian Invaders tried to enter Yasin Vally via this pass in the 19th Century but British pushed them back from the Darkot Pass on their way to subcontinent.

Day 14 :
TREK DARKOT TO GAMUBAR BASE CAMP

The second portion of our trek starts here towards Ghamubar. We will walk through the village cross a long suspension bridge to Ghasum Village in the snout of Ghamubar Glacier. The welcoming community of the village greet you along the villages. We will reach our campsite beside the glacier in lateral moraine with grass and colorful flowers under Ghamubar Peak about 6,400 m above the camp. There is great view back to the Darkot Village the way we came up in the previous day. Overnight stay in tent.

Day 15 :
TREK GHAMUBAR TO GOHICHO KUTU ACROSS THE PASS

Having our hearty camping breakfast head up steeply towards the pass. Ghamubar Glacier will stay in our left we will climb and up on a scree steep to the pass (4,300m). The views from the pass will make us grateful. To our left we have Ghamubar Peak and to the right we have one of the famous peak in Hindukush Thui-I (6,660) and many others. The top highlight from here is three amazing 3 water falls straight ahead are mind-blowing. Above all, a glacier that is also called Ghamubar in Thui side is magnificent stays all the way down to near our campsite.

Gohicho Kutu the last summer pasture that was used by the people of Thui Valley in the past is beautiful place with green flat campsite with a crystal-clear spring water in natural water channel. We will camp here with fascinating views a best place to stay a rest day here.

Day 16 :
A REST DAY TO BE RELAX AFTER THIS LONG TREK

Relax and washing in the morning in the after-noon rolling around the camp. An amazing place with stunning views.

Day 17 :
TREK GHICHO KUTU TO NAILTI THUI

After the breakfast we leave our camp and walk smoothly down to Thui Village. There are great views on the way down. We will pass through some summer houses Chelishi, Shatuing, Hakal some with fields of barley and potatoes. Very few stay in these summer houses unlike in the past. We will reach Thui a largest village in Yasin valley. Here we take our car to proper Yasin to stay overnight in hotel. Yasin one the most interesting village it was once the center of Little Blore and played an important role in the history ancient rulers and kings.

Day 18 :
TREK NIALTI TO LASHT

The 6 hours walking begins on a jeep road for the first hour and continues on a clear route alongside the Thui River with breathtaking landscape and views of Thui-I, 6,666 meters, and many more in the surrounding. You will arrive in Lasht, a summer village with crystal-clear spring water and a campground with comfortable place, after a three-hour hike. Our porters will perform songs around the campfire to enjoy the occasion. We'll enjoy a wonderful evening with camping food. Overnight stay in tent.

Day 19 :
TREK LASHT TO SHOLTALLING

Walking alongside the summer homes and across the river goes well on this day. The sceneries today are unimaginably beautiful. The highlights of the day are hanging glaciers, waterfalls, and the snow-covered, tiny Hindukush peaks. We will meet people in the summer homes offer tea, it is important to encourage accepting the offer. We will walk across various highlights with fun. Unlike trekking in the Himalayas and the Karakorum, you will have a unique experience in this trip. Camp close to the river in the snout of the Gashochi Glacier at 3,800 meters and spend the night in a tent.

Day 20 :
TREK SHOLTALING TO GASHOCHI

Approaching to Gashochi is bit tough in the beginning getting on the moraine of the the Gashochi Glacier's moraine until you reach white ice makes the initial approach to Gashochi a little challenging. The fact that there are not large crevasses on this glacier. As you continue to ascend, you will eventually reach Ghoshochi, which is a grassy area with wild onions (campsite as the name of the place Ghashu for onions in the local language Brushaski which is spoken by the people of Yasin and Hunza) and a variety of vibrant flowers. The day is jam-packed with sights, including snow-capped mountains and verdant pastures. One of the most interesting campsites on my trip is this one. Camp at 4100 meters and spend the night in a tent.

Day 21 :
TREK GASHOCHI TO GOLPIGAL ACROSS THUI PASS (4499M

  The most interesting day of trek that you are going to cross Thui Pass 4,999 meters and get into another region Yarkhun Valley an amazing valley of Chitral district of Khyber Pukhtun Khaw (KPK) Province (formerly known as N.W.F.P).

   This day will be little hard for you until to reach the pass you have to climb about 500 meters from the campsite on a steep way along the grassy path in the first two hours with superb views of the white peaks (Thui-I 6666m, Thui-II 6600m, Qalander Gom 6,100m etc) of the both sides and then on the rocky path close to the pass. On the Yarkhun side has panoramic views of Gazin Zom 5,900m, Gazin Glacier and down to the Yarkhun Valley. If you are lucky to have clear weather for the views from the pass is incredible. From the pass you are descending to the campsite of Golpigal which is wonderful campsite with clear spring water to drink and wash.

Day 22 :
TREKGOLPIGAL TO GAZIN-DRIVE TO MASTUJ

  This is the last day of your wonderful trek you can stay in Gazin after 5 hours smooth walk or either can continue to Mastuj or Chitral town from Golpigal you have options here to enjoy more of your holidays in the Yarkhun valley or in the historical city of Chitral. There many amazing trekking and climbing opportunities you can enjoy. You may also go to Gilgit by Shandur Pass on a bus or with your special transport or drive to Peshawar via Lawori Tanel. If you wish to fly from Chitral and if lucky enough with the weather you can do it as well. There is weekly flight from Islamabad and to Chitral.

Day 23 :
DRIVE MASTUJ TO CHITRAL & KALASH VALLEY

An amazing road journey starts on a rough road for two hours to Boni and then another two hour drive to Chitral on a metal road with stunning views. The Yarkhun River and charismatic village on both sides are eye-catching. Terich Mir 7870 the highest mountain in Hindukush is the top highlight and magnificent view from the main city of Chitral. We will visit to the Shahi Mosque and Shahi Qila to explore the history of Chitral. After lunch will drive two hours to the south the unique Kalash Valley to experience the unique people, culture and their life. We will stay overnight in a hotel with amazing stories in evening.

Day 24 :
DRIVE KALASH-ISLAMABAD

A heart-touching journey along the Kabul River and passing through Lawari Tunnel to Dir and Sawat Valley along the foot-prints of Alexandra the Great. Peshawar is life-time experience. Sawat Motor Way to Peshawar with mind-blowing highlights of the day. The journey continues on the Peshawar Motorway to Islamabad the capital city of Pakistan.

Day 25 :
FLY HOME

TNA's representative will drop you at Islamabad International for your home bound flight.
